Hey India! These tunes sure sound familiar…
We crossed off another movie from the list today: National Lampoon’s Vacation. MIM really liked it and it’s one of my all time favorites. Towards the end, when the family is running slow-mo across the Walley World parking lot and the theme song from Chariots of Fire begins to play, MIM points out that he’s heard this song before – only the Hindi version.
What? There’s a Hindi version? I ask, interested. So this led us on an internet search to find all the Bollywood movies that stole – er uh – borrowed music from the West. It’s an interesting list which I’m sure is incomplete! Did they buy the rights to these songs or simply just copy them? I’m thinking they had to buy the rights, how else could they get away with it? MIM is not so sure. Are these songs too close for comfort? You be the judge!
Chariots of Fire vs. Main Teri Hoon Janam
I Just Called To Say I Love You by Stevie Wonder vs. Aate Jaate
The Final Countdown by Europe vs. Mere Rang Mein
Macarena by Los del Rio vs. Dil Le Le Lena
Rendez Vous by Jean Michel Jarre vs. Agneepath
Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman by Bryan Adams vs. Jab Kisi Ki Taraf Dil

Please don't hesitate to comment or contact me directly. I love both!

lol…this list is gonna be a long one. bollywood is notorious for lifting music quite openly. though i guess of late they’ve started looking into giving credits and buying rights unlike the pre-internet age when it was open season year round!
WOW that is interesting to hear these songs in other lanuages song by other people but also quite fun all at the same time

There’s an entire website devoted to discovering inspirations behind popular Indian film songs. http://itwofs.com/
Wow! That site is crazy! Thanks Quizman!
The bollywood producers of today lack creativity and originality .
The bollywood of today is too busy aping the hollywood . There was a time when Indian cinema could boast of many ” Classic ” films , but the bollywood blockbusters of today are full of ” Sleaze , Obscenity and Vulgarity . The Bollywood producers of today tend to concentrate only on the ” Quantitative ” aspect rather than the ” Qualitative ” .
There is another dark truth associated with the Bollywood that most of you would agree with – ” The Casting Couch ” . Young aspiring girls who want to become tomorrow’s actresses are sexually exploited by the Film Fraternity . These young girls in order to have a career in bollywood have to compromise on their ” Virginity ” . In short Bollywood has ruined Indian culture .
If that is the case then I think I can become a music composer as well. Bollywood here i come…………..
Hehe!!!
That was Bear and my very first argument!!! Whether Race stole their background tune from Mission Impossible or if Mission Impossible stole it from some obscure Hindi movie he said came before Race but had the same “tune”. I was like…dude, MI was a US TV series that originally came out in 1966, do you SERIOUSLY think that THAT got copied from a HINDI film???? And he said (very seriously) “Yes”. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH ROFLMAO. Gotta love him. He was kidding of course. At least, I’m pretty sure he was….
Hey, I came across this blog from The Gori Wife Life and I love reading it! Our lives parallel so much, although I’m the desi chick and he’s the ‘gora’ guy.
As for Bollywood songs, producers have only started getting copyrights ever since the internet has made it possible for people to realize that the songs can be lifted from unknown or even well known non-Indian songs. And now there’s a reverse trend of people copying off from Indian songs!
