Hindus vs. Muslims
I’m currently reading a book titled Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found by Suketu Mehta.
Once it arrived it became my nightly read and I soon found out it wasn’t a light read by any means. There’s some scary stuff in there about the underground going ons in Bombay. I am a Pollyanna by nature, so I was instantly frightened and turned off by India. I started to find it hard to read just before bed because it was too depressing and I would lay awake thinking about it all too much.
One subject that’s a constant throughout much of the book is the many hate crimes, abuse, and murders between Muslims and Hindus. I will admit that it wasn’t until I became involved with My Indian Man that I even knew there had been and still is tension between the two. I’m glad that I have since been exposed to that part of the world and I eagerly eat up any new information I can find, whether current event or history.
I am a very accepting person. I have no biases. As long as you are a nice person, I like you. So I find it very hard to understand these acts of hatred as described in the book. But it did clarify one thing to me… I still don’t accept that it is right, but now I understand why this happened:
I once was being tutored in Hindi by an Indian girl. We got along fabulously. I really came to love our meetings which usually ended up lasting 3 hours; 1 of which was actually spent studying Hindi. One day I suggested she and I should double date with her husband and My Indian Man. She was all for it. But when the day came, she backed out. I was hurt and didn’t understand why. Later she told me the reason. It was because her husband who is Hindu, didn’t want to meet my boyfriend, who is Muslim.
I was shocked. In all my life I have never witnessed a blatant act of prejudice. I had met her husband many times. We had chai together many times. Their son loved me. Still, he wanted nothing to do with my Muslim boyfriend. Since this occurance, I found it hard to be as excited about going to Hindi lessons. In fact, I completely lost interest, even thought she had nothing to do with his actions. She was very apologetic about it. I just never quite felt the same after it happened.
It still saddens me to this day to think about it. I was hurt by it, My Indian Man was hurt by it, and it ruined a blossoming friendship. In reading Maximum City, as well as educating myself in other ways, I now can better understand why a Muslim could hate a Hindu and vice versa. But I still can’t understand why anyone would want to hate. This only actuates the problem further.
Let me tell you hinduism is one of the most tolerant religions in the world.We openly accepted jews and persians in India when they came 2000 years back driven by invaders from their own lands.The thing is they never butchered us…we cohibited in peace.We never had any hate culture until our own existance came under threat.We never had anti semitism neither we ever invaded any country.Sikhs,jains and buddhists live and cohibited with us peacefully.We never had any problem with Mongoloid people from china.They understood we wanted peace.But let me ask you what will you do when your own existance comes under threat in your homeland?The muslims invaded us a 1000 years back draining our wealth and taking it to Arab.Moreover they butchered a lot of our people and converted a lot of our people to Islam.The process has never ended.They made us low type in our own land.They broke off parts of our contry claiming as Islamic lands and butchering the remaining hindus (pakistan,bangladesh).Their formula is to always marry in the other religion to increase their number but they will never allow their women to marry in other religion easily.Their thinking is savage and barbaric.They kill ech other for samll reasons.They are good at deception so never trust them.They will beg borrow steat to increase their number.They have killed or converted millions of hindus to Islam forcing their savage thinking on us.So they were attacked time and again.It is said by their lot if you rape or kill a hindu women you go straight to heaven.They openly practice incest by marrying in their own cousins.I am sure you must have read about Gujrat massacare where 1000 muslims where killed.But do you know muslims burnt a bogey full of our hindu brethern without any provcation to start it.Let me put it this way what you did when 9/11 happened in your country.Same way we dealt with it.They are still coming into India from Pakistan,Bangladesh …always trying to increase their number…by producing large number of children.
I pity you Akash. I’m muslim and I’m from India. I’ve lived all my life surrounded by Hindus and Muslims. We all lived like friends and never had any problem because of the religion. It is people like you who is responsible for communal riots because you have so much hatred towards other religion. I used to think it is the uneducated ones and politicians who are responsible for the hatred that is prevailing in our Indian society. But I was wrong. There are some educated fools as well who are good at spreading hate across the country.
FYI Arabs are rich because of the oil. It was the British who took everything before India’s independence. Mughals ruled India but they have given a lot to India. I think you must have heard about a monument called Taj Mahal. Mughal boosted the Indian economy. British came and toppled the Mughal empire and they made India poor.
You mentioned few things that are not true like “It is said by their lot if you rape or kill a hindu women you go straight to heaven”. I wonder how people make strong statements like that. Have you ever read Quran? Your knowledge is very confined and tainted. You need to do more research before you write things like that.
This is the last post from my side on this topic coz I don’t want to go back n forth. Hope you will try to learn about other religion and be more responsible. And please DO NOT spread hate. There is already so much of hate in this world.
I am sure this ‘anonymous’ person is your boyfriend.Most of my information has been researched through wiki encylopedia and other sources.The strong comment you talk about was mentioned in Taslima Nasreen’s controversial novel ‘Lajja’.The Taj Mahal you talk about is itself constructed on an ancient Shiva temple

Hi Akash, thanks for coming to my site and sharing your opinions. I did write this post with hopes of further discussion in mind. I assure you there are many Muslims living in India and not every one of them is my boyfriend! Many Indians check this site everyday. ‘Anonymous’ can surly be anyone. But anyways, I’m sure information can be researched on both sides and each will have their facts and reasons to hate. But I assure you my Muslim boyfriend is the sweetest most gentle person, as are many other Muslims and Hindus. What has happened in the past has happened. It is today and the future that matters.

I agree with you. I’ve never experienced any biased treatment from anyone when I was living in India. I feel the more India is becoming westernized the more Hindus and Muslims are coming closer. Teenagers hardly care about the religious differences. They only care about good company. I personally think there are few bad Muslims who are affecting the whole community. The worst part is that we don’t have a leader who can condemn hatred crimes being done by brain-washed people in the name of religion. It was nice to hear your thoughts.
Actually, I’m hindu, and my two best friends are muslims. And no one could guess that we are so-to-say ‘natural born enemies’.
Seriously. One of them wears the burqa to school everyday, and, when we began highschool, she started to wear it at all times out of home. She is conservative in her religion, yet she and her family advocate women’s rights and such. And she and I get along as desi’s; not as hindus and muslims.
My other bff is a more liberal muslim. She doesn’t wear the burqa; in fact she practically hates it. She detested being forced to stay indoors during halloween, and she even told me she won’t ever install any of these islam conservative restrictions onto her own children.
So you see, it’s only muslim extremists, aka what we call ‘terrorists’ who are the ones hurting the hindu people of india. And it is of this fact that our people hurt them back. Muslims in general are well-liked, and are often pretty nice people! just stay away from people who try to shove their own religion down other people’s throats.

Disapointing to here about your friend’s husband. I think its good that you saw their true colours early on before you actually continued with that friendship.

Really sad that you guys had to experience this kind of discrimination and I know it hurts. I am a Christian who supposedly are far less discriminated against vis a vis Muslims. But the truth is far from it as I myself have had ugly experiences with such behavior. Once while traveling from my home town to Delhi, I met this businessman from Delhi. He wanted to move to Bhopal and wanted local knowledge, which I was willing to dispense… After chatting for hours he asked me about my caste to which I told that I had none! He did not get it so I told him that I was a Christian and he did not utter a single word to me after I had mentioned my religious beliefs.. As a kid leaving home for the first time this incident really hurt me a lot. Thankfully such bigots are few and far between… BTW Akash WTH Dude!! Do you seriously rely on wikipedia for research… Gimme 10 mins and let me create some “History” for you. And for gods sake lets us not delve on the primitive aspects of Islam… All religions have unsavory aspects Hinduism and Christianity included which were may or may not be pertinent during their inception… It is for the followers to interpret and adapt it to modern times… In fact read some of William Daralymples books you’ll learn that Islam was a more accessible religion in comparison to Hinduism that’s why initially a lot of European settlers adopted it. Education should equip one to form their own original opinion and not spiel right-wing spleen from dubious sources. So Akash please get an education!

You are just over reacting trying to portray yourself as a pure soul devoid of any discrimination. Akash has only stated the facts. It’s not that Muslims have a problem only with the Hindus, they seem to hate everyone who doesn’t believe in Allah.Go to Saudi Arabia, you’ll find hatred for the jews and Christians in the text books. Pakistan’s case is well known. Even Malaysia and Turkey which were once very liberal countries allowing non-Muslims to practice their religions peacefully are slowing taking the Islamic route. I could go on and on with the examples. My singular point is, there is something dramatically wrong with the people practicing Islam. They’ve been fed with utter rubbish by their so called Muslim leaders or Mullahs as they are called. And Nipun Sohanlal, what Akash said was something more profound than the experience you had. I’ve had bad experiences with people of other religions as well, but they’re just a tiny minority. In the case of Muslims, there are unfortunately only a few liberal muslims. Say, only 10% of the Muslims all over the world are like MIM. Rest of them are all not even worth looking at. This is a fact hard to digest, but it’s also the truth. I don’t hate Muslims but I am aware of Hindu-Muslim issues and don’t think twice before condemning anyone who is needs to be condemned. I don’t pretend to be all goody goody like a lot of people do, I just state facts without being biased.

Then I hope my friend you can agree that this is not purely an Islamic trend with the rise of the Hindu Right wing in India (though this trend seems to have been somewhat arrested) and the active involvement of the Bible belt in US politics which includes the policy of refuting evolution?! And I would not agree with your with only 10% being liberal at least not in places where the population is well educated!! I would peg the number as higher!! Similarly many hindus I would say are not at all very liberal, only thing is that a burkha and a beard will make a conservative Muslim easy to spot.. Other faiths it is not that easy to spot the conservative! Cheers

When I said liberal Muslims, I actually meant tolerant Muslims. There’s nothing wrong in being conservative, it’s just a matter of what suits you the best. Being conservative doesn’t amount to intolerance by any means.
As far as your other comment about the Hindu Right wing is concerned, let me put it this way. There are barbarians in every society,every nationality,every religion,every race etc. There’s good and bad everywhere, I don’t deny it at all. Can you tell me why Islam is under so much strain unlike any other religion? The simple answer is, Islam has been hijacked by Islamic countries. Their leaders have their own agenda to fulfill, scarcely caring for the needs of their own people. Their singular agenda is Islamification of this world. No matter how impossible and ridiculous this idea sounds, it’s the sad truth.

This is what is being taught to Muslim chilren in Madrasas. It happens full scale in Islamic countries where there’s no one to question the authority of the supreme leader who rules like a dictator seldom himself following the rules set by him for his own people. Indian madrasas are not spared too.

I wonder why does Islam propogate such hatred towards the people of other religion . All the readers on this blog will agree that human life is precious and no one has the right to kill others .
Secondly , why do Muslims refer to Hindus as ” Kafirs ” or ” infidels ” . Don’t the people in this world have the freedom and choice to practice their own religion .

@Amit, why are you posting videos of Anjem Chouduray to try and show what muslims are like? Do you know that he only has a following of about 200 muslims in the UK, and other muslims hate him.
@Shaunak, all religions allow killing. That is why Sikhs carry daggers, that is why warriors are so important in Hinduism. Muslims were at war and under attack, so why aren’t muslims allowed to kill those who were fighting them, yet Hindus and Sikhs are? hypocrisy?

I really don’t think we need lecture from other people as how to tackle muslims.Most of the muslims(90% or more) are converted hindus in the Indian Subcontinent(Afganistan(Afganistan is particularly invaders,Hindu,persian mix),pakistan,India and bangladesh).We know exactly what they are and what they will do.We have always known.We treat them likewise.Although they are very good at exporting their women to Arab Sheikhs even today and working as slaves to their gulf masters whom they consider their brothers even though they are closer to us by blood.This is a cursed religion and they will never stop however you try.First they will kill everybody saying Kafir and then they will kill each other saying Shiya,Sunni,Ahmedia etc.
I seriously can’t think like you Akash. I think my name pretty much says that I am a Hindu and definitely not a fanatic like you. I just don’t have a hatred like you. Yeah, I agree some of the past events were really bad and has resulted in lots of killing on both sides. But that doesn’t mean that everybody who is a Muslim is a terrorist or every Hindu is a Muslim hater. As a kid I grew up with many Muslim friends and tell you what no one has slightest association with terrorism now and one of my Muslim friend went on to join Indian Army and now serves in NSG and fought against terrorists in Mumbai. So, just don’t generalize and blame every Indian muslim is a terrorist. First, try to understand that they are humans. People like you bring bad name to India and to Hindu religion as well.
In Islam, all humans are created equal. For example, there is no superiority of an Arab over a non-Arab, or vice versa. Blacks and whites have no superiority over each other. The same holds with any other nationality or ethnicity. Islam rejects characterizing God in any human form or depicting Him as favoring certain individuals or nations on the basis of wealth, power or race. He created the human beings as equals. They may distinguish themselves and get His favor through virtue and piety only.
Hinduism has a caste system, with four major castes. Members of each are required by strict religious laws to follow certain hereditary occupations and to refrain from intermarriage or eating with members of the other castes. The highest, or priestly and intellectual, caste is that of the Brahmans. The remaining three in order are Kshatriya (ruling or warrior caste), Vaisya (common artisan and agricultural caste), and the Sudras (the low caste people).

MDG, while I commend your professed love for your man, I will agree there is a big Hindu-Muslim divide in India. If it wasnt for the Hinduism, India would not be India today. You are right, majority of Indians diskile muslims because they declare there allegiance to Islam, Paskistan & the Arab world, not to India, and consider Hindus infidels while living in their country. India may be secular, but its only seculae because its majority Hindu. There is no India without Hinduism & there is no Hinduism without India. They are intertwined. Thats what 85% of Indians, who are Hindus beleive. Its sad, but MIM would never be considered fully Indian. I hardly beleive he never suffered discrimination in India. Its impossible. A lot of people simply do not like muslims in India. Culturally & historically, India is and always remain Hindu secular nation. Muslims didnt want to be with Hindus, so they demanded Pakistan, and got one. Please dont expect a VIP treatment in predominantly Hindu India, while holding hands of your muslim lover.
