My First Hair Oil Experience

Besides the time in 6th grade when I thought it would be nice to bathe in baby oil and subsequently went to school with an embarrassing greasy mane that even 20 shampooings couldn’t get rid of, I have never oiled my hair.

Until now that is! MIM has a bottle of hair oil that he got when visiting his brother in Abu Dhabi. He’s mentioned hair oil a few times before, but I’ve never actually seen him do it. His mother and his bhabhi do it all the time and you can’t deny Indian women have beautiful hair. So on this particular evening, I suggested we do it together! I wanted to know what all the fuss was all about. Now mind you, I had to work the next morning and I was a bit nervous I would have the same results I experienced many years ago, but I was too excited to try something Indians have been doing throughout history.

MIM did my hair first. I sat on the floor staring into a mirror to watch the process. He started at the roots, massaged it in, and then drew outwards to lightly cover the ends. The end result looks like your hair hasn’t been washed in weeks. This particular hair oil was infused with herbs, so it smelled amazing! Next I did his, and we both left it in the entire night, washing it in the morning.

The results? I immediately noticed my hair (especially at the roots) was much softer. Because my hair is short, I don’t usually have tangles. But when it was very long, and after a disastrous perm, I could hardly get a comb through it. I wish I knew about hair oil then! I’m not sure if hair oil will make your hair grow thicker or faster, but I will agree the immediate results are softness and shine. Oh and – it does wash out in one shampooing, unlike baby oil!

It does make it grow thicker and stronger. I don’t know if it’s faster though.

I like hair oil very much. And I use it for all of my body hair too :-)

  • Hair oil I have tried hot oil treatments which my my thick hair very oily is not good. What is the name of this hair oil treatment? I would not mind trying something like this. I would not mind giving it go.

  • Haha @ Anil. :-P

I keep getting told that I MUST oil my hair in India. It’s become very dry and polluted. I even bought a bottle of hair oil, and my husband says he’ll do it for me, but I can’t bring myself to say yes. Won’t the pillows all get oily? The thought of it just isn’t very appealing!

  • Anil

lol…. Sharell. Looking at your picture I can tell that you’ve nice hair. I use towels to cover my pillow. I put hair oil three times a week. Its so soothing!

Nicki, I’ll find out the name for you but it may be hard to find here in the states. MIM got it in Abu Dhabi and I’m not sure if they even have it in India…

Sharell, MIM had me sleep on one of his old t-shirts so yes, it will get your pillows oily. Just wrap them in a towel or the like. Get your husband to do it for you! It’s a nice experience to share together.

    Thanks for the comments everyone!

Have to try it! My hair could use it right now!

  • Rakhi

I watched the ad. It was hilarious. In India girls and boys use hair oil almost once a week. I use Dabur awla!

  • That hair oil routine reminds me on my days in India :) . I hardly oil my hair now, but i love that process and the hair does feel really good and the scalp massage even more heavenly. You need to oil your hair in India occassionally because the air is so polluted and dry.

Hi ‘A’! Are you from India or were you visiting? And yes, the massage is niiiice!

Rakhi, thanks for stopping by and commenting. Glad you liked the ad as much as me!

    @ Anil

Yo man! You’re crazy. Who puts hair oil all over their body? I have neva heard of someone doing that. I don’t use any kind of oil and still my hair looks kinda good.

  • MDG

LOL I agree with Adi…never heard of anyone using hair oil all over their body! Must be prreeeettyyy hairy Anil!! :)

Actually, applying massage oil over the body is a common practice. You can get scented massage oil in most stores, at least here on the West Coast. Ideally, you should do it before a (bubble) bath. It helps to moisturize your skin. If are not able to get scented massage oils, you can use olive oil.
